Indonesia is the largest moslem population country in the whole world. That's the first thing you should remember when you plan a trip to Indonesia, especially when it comes to Eid Fitri.
Why do you have to keep it mind about that? So you can anticipate the situation during the festive season.
Before and after Eid Fitri people will walk really slow. We are already in holiday mode, that is why. If you have like more than a week travel time, that won't be a problem, but if you have less than that make sure all your itinerary fix and make A, B, C, and so on plan. Well, actually that's for those who call themself a backpacker.
If you decide just to stay in Jakarta, things you might face are: almost free of trafic (that's why I love Jakarta during this season), less poluted air, less honking car. Sounds cool huh? But, that's not it. All good things will come with bad side, such as most of the food stall close (except the ones in every mall), limited public transportation.
Why is Jakarta empty? Most of Jakartans are natively from other province. Eid Fitri gives them at least one week holiday, thus they make it best out of it to go back to their hometown. This, pilgrim, will happen in other big cities. Every year, it will cost bad traffic in every main road. Beside that, all public transportation out of Jakarta will be fully occupied.
If your plan is to visit touristic place, u have to be aware of local tourists also. Those are non-moslem people who also want to have a good time for a week off. Indonesia robust economy increase mid-class people who doesn't really mind to spend their money on a very good excursion.
My sugestion is, find part of Indonesia with less moslem population suchas Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Papua, North Sulawesi, and I am sorry can't mention more. I have limited knowledge about that. But, you also have to be aware of the increasing price of public transportation and accomodation. FYI, our inflation rate during ramadhan and Eid is the highest among the other months.
I never traveled during holiday season because of those reasons. Feel bad for my friend, who still on his trip and lost hours of his time for bad traffic.
